Mage macros

Mages command the arcane arts, using their deep understanding of the elemental forces to unleash powerful spells and control the battlefield.

23 macros

  • #showtooltip Blizzard
    /cast [@cursor] Blizzard

Drops your channelled area damage at the cursor with no confirmation click. On multi-target pulls this is pressed on cooldown, so the saved click adds up fast.

  • #showtooltip Counterspell
    /cancelaura Ice Block
    /cast Counterspell

Drops Ice Block and kicks in the same press. Sitting in a block while the enemy healer casts freely is a common way to lose an arena.

  • #showtooltip
    /cast [mod:shift] Conjure Refreshment Table
    /cast [nomod] Conjure Refreshment
    /use [nomod] Conjured Mana Bun

Conjures your food when you are out and eats it when you have some. Holding Shift instead lays down a refreshment table for the group.

  • #showtooltip
    /cast [button:2] Conjure Mana Gem
    /stopmacro [button:2]
    /use Mana Gem

Right-click to conjure a fresh Mana Gem, left-click to use the one you are carrying. Arcane Mages go through these constantly and this keeps both actions on a single slot.

  • #showtooltip Counterspell
    /stopcasting
    /cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] Counterspell

Stops your cast and kicks your focus target, falling back to your current target. Counterspell has a long cooldown for an interrupt, so aiming it deliberately matters.

  • #showtooltip Flamestrike
    /cast [@cursor] Flamestrike

Casts Flamestrike where your mouse is pointing. Fire Mages cast this off a Hot Streak proc that can expire, so removing the reticle step genuinely prevents wasted procs.

  • #showtooltip Frostbolt
    /cast [mod:shift,@mouseover][@focus,harm,nodead][] Frostbolt

A template for any spell you want aimed at a focus target — replace both instances of the spell name. Holding Shift redirects it to your mouseover instead.

  • #showtooltip
    /cast [mod:shift] Blink; Frost Nova

Roots everything around you and immediately starts your escape. Nova is nearly always followed by moving away, so pairing it with Blink on a modifier keeps both on one key.

  • #showtooltip Ice Lance
    /cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][] Ice Lance

Lances whatever you are hovering, otherwise your target. Useful for finishing off a low-health add or cleaving a shatter without giving up your primary target.

  • #showtooltip Blink
    /stopcasting
    /cast Blink

Interrupts whatever you are casting and blinks immediately. Waiting for a Pyroblast to finish before you dodge is not a trade you want to make.

  • #showtooltip
/cast [known:Blazing Barrier] Blazing Barrier; [known:Prismatic Barrier] Prismatic Barrier; Ice Barrier

Casts whichever barrier your specialisation actually has — Blazing for Fire, Prismatic for Arcane, Ice for Frost. The known check means the same macro works on all three without editing.

  • /cast [mod:shift] Portal: Exodar; [mod:alt] Portal: Stormwind; [mod:ctrl] Portal: Darnassus; Portal: Ironforge

Portal: Ironforge on a normal press, with Shift, Alt and Ctrl covering Exodar, Stormwind and Darnassus. Four portal buttons collapsed into one slot.

  • /cast [mod:shift] Portal: Silvermoon; [mod:alt] Portal: Undercity; [mod:ctrl] Portal: Thunder Bluff; Portal: Orgrimmar

The Horde counterpart — Orgrimmar by default, with Silvermoon, Undercity and Thunder Bluff on Shift, Alt and Ctrl.

  • /cast [mod:shift] Teleport: Exodar; [mod:alt] Teleport: Stormwind; [mod:ctrl] Teleport: Darnassus; Teleport: Ironforge

The same layout as the portal macro but for your own teleports, so the muscle memory carries across between moving yourself and moving the group.

  • /cast [mod:shift] Teleport: Silvermoon; [mod:alt] Teleport: Undercity; [mod:ctrl] Teleport: Thunder Bluff; Teleport: Orgrimmar

Horde teleports on one key, mirroring the Horde portal macro so both behave identically.

  • #showtooltip Polymorph
    /cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] Polymorph

Sheeps your focus target without touching your current target. Polymorph breaks on damage, so casting it on something you are not attacking is the entire point of the spell.

  • #showtooltip Remove Curse
    /cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][help][@player] Remove Curse

Decurses whoever you are hovering, then your target, then yourself. Curses land on random raid members, so a mouseover dispel is far quicker than hunting through frames.

  • #showtooltip Ring of Frost
    /cast [@cursor] !Ring of Frost

Places Ring of Frost at your cursor and the exclamation mark keeps a second press from cancelling it. Ring takes time to form, so putting it where enemies will be rather than where they are is the skill.

  • #showtooltip Polymorph
    /focus [mod:shift]
    /stopmacro [mod:shift]
    /cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] Polymorph

Holding Shift sets your current target as focus; pressing it normally sheeps that focus. One key handles both halves of the crowd control job, which matters when a pull goes wrong.

  • /cast [mod:shift] Teleport: Shattrath; Portal: Shattrath

Opens a portal to Shattrath normally, or teleports yourself there while Shift is held.

  • #showtooltip Ice Block
    /stopcasting
    /cast !Ice Block

Cancels your current cast and blocks, and the exclamation mark stops a second press from dropping the block again. Panicking and mashing the key is exactly when you cannot afford it to toggle off.

  • #showtooltip Spellsteal
    /cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][] Spellsteal

Steals a buff from whatever your cursor is over. The buff worth taking is rarely on your current target, which makes a mouseover bind the difference between using Spellsteal and forgetting it exists.

  • #showtooltip
/cast [nopet] Summon Water Elemental; [@cursor] Freeze

Summons your elemental when you have no pet, and casts Freeze at your cursor when you do. Frost Mages need both buttons but almost never at the same moment.

Other WoW classes

Every class shares the same macro syntax, so a good idea usually ports across.
